Assignment 3 February 29, 2012
Promoting environmental suitability, providing green and healthy air vehicles, and transportation, helping to solve problems with runoff water, controlling crime more efficiently, better land use, quality assured community service.
I for sure see Norfolk shifting to a completely zero emissions, and alternative-fuel transportation lifestyle. Sustainable, fair-trade farming around the city you definitely have to be a must in Norfolk for a plan like this one to work. Windmills off the coast and solar panels on top of every building in the city would be implemented in our plan.
Smart growth will be used in this New Norfolk plan. It is a concept that means to preserve natural lands and critical environmental areas, protect water and air quality, and reuse already-developed land. New Norfolk will reinvesting in existing infrastructure by designing neighborhoods that have shops, offices, schools, churches, parks, and other amenities near homes. Communities will be giving their residents and visitors the option of walking, bicycling, taking public transportation, or driving as they go about their day. Without gaging because of the fumes from the HRT bus driving by them as they walk to their destinations.
Economy versus Ecology, this has to do with the codependence of the human economy in relation to the natural ecosystem while preserving the natural capital. New Norfolk will implement this into the program by designing its focus around nature, the sustainability, economic development, and the focus, drive on the natural resources we have at hand. Using advanced technologies, that in today’s society we unfortunately do not have at hand right now. One example would be to take attendance at a local university when you walk in the room the students eyes will be scanned, admitting them to attend class that day, or the parking garage’s that you drop your car off on a huge elevator and it parks your car for you they currently have things like this car garaged in Japan and china. New Norfolk has a lot at its hands and we are developing more technology to use for our plan. More to come!
An example for how this city will handle the localized environmental problems including pesticide runoff and water availability would be by providing a change in the number of days the Norfolk beaches are closed due to bacteria from runoff water, changing certain waterways to be “no dumping or discharge areas/zones” a city maintained pumping out of all harmful stuff in the waters at certain boat ramps, and for HRSD to change the storm water systems. This city will use new technologies, by contributing to the air quality. New Norfolk would plan to increase air quality by providing green alternative fuels for HRT buses and rail systems, supporting the development of greenhouse emissions, ticketing people who idle in their car with it running for longer than 5 minutes, providing a different workplace for those who don’t want to harm the environment by commuting into the workplace.

You tube TED Video:
*She wanted to grow her own food, without harmful effects to the land, without fertilizers or air pollution destroying here plants.
*She used discarded plastic bottles, (recycling, and not digging into the natural earth)
*She believed that window farms make for vertical hydroponic platforms for growing food in city windows.
picture 1- Minimizes waste by using the river as an energy source to power the building
Picture 2- This is a new model of a five star resort that is built into the ground by using all of its natural resources to generate itself.
Picture 3- This is an house that completely reduces air pollution, coming into the house. This makes the home owner efficiently economic.http://buildingsandcontructions.blogspot.com/2011/07/green-building-concept-is-becoming-more.html
•Feature (and include an image for) at least 1 example of how you will maximize the potential for using alternative-energy vehicles (see p. 273)
Aerodynamic, and a hydrogen record car, is powered entirely by the clean-burning process of liquid-hydrogen combustion

Shareable future of cities February 20, 2012
How many people does Steffen estimate we will have living in or near cities by mid-century?
8 billion or more
Explain how you agree or disagree with Steffen’s point that our energy use is “predestined” rather than “behavioral”.
I agree with Steffen’s point our energy usage is predestined. Because of so much population growth
What correlation does Steffen make between a city’s density and its climate emissions?
The denser the city is the lesser climate emissions, because everything is close by so you may walk rather than use pollution.
What are the “eco districts” that Steffen mentions? How you see these as feasible or unfeasible in a city like Norfolk?
when someone reweaves and makes use out of places that are already there. I believe we can do this by just using what we have right at our fingertips
Explain how you agree or disagree with the “threshold effect” that Steffen discusses related to transportation.
I believe this could happen if enough people wanted to start walking instead of using cars and busses.
What does Steffen mean by the idea that, “…even space itself is turning into a service…”? Can you provide any examples that you see here in Norfolk or elsewhere?
Its turning into a service is the idea that people share spaces. An example could be the constant convocation center.
Finally, overall in what way(s) do you see Steffen’s ideas working / not working here in Norfolk? Spend time with this question!
He had a lot of good ideas for re working the cities. This could be a great idea for Norfolk and building an eco district. But a lot of people would have to work together to create this
Abstract 1: Technology Overview and Impact January 22, 2012
Kaplan, D. (2001). A new state of fear. (cover story). U.S. News & World Report, 131(17), 14.
America has been highly in fear of terrorism since 9-11. Anthrax has been one main threat to Americans closely following these attacks on our Nation. Using anthrax to threaten citizens in the mail is something no one knew was coming. Ever since these threats in the mail people were on edge about any kind of chemical or biological, or nuclear arms that could have destroyed our nation. The scary thing as stated in the the article that this is such a surprise a shock that either this is happening by American citizens or its happening by non citizens terrorists. This was a wake up call for Americans. It was let out through mass media that these threats were happening and our military should be prepared. Terrorists were desperate, they were hitting a fear in Americans that was not welcomed. This white powdery substance could kill someone on the spot, and have effects of destroying ones life. Every American feared opening their mail. It was hard to protect yourself when, someone was just trying to read their mail.
I liked this article by Kaplan. It shows that we as a nation with the most advanced technology of the World does not seem so accurate, anymore. Americans are allowed to be afraid, we are only humans, but how could they go this far, to where we cannot even check our mail without being afraid of a chemical substance killing us. I think since 2001 we have come very far in the advancement of technology and that we today could have been prepared for that. We now know that this could happen again. A lot of people do paperless billing, so they don’t even have to receive mail anymore which is a great smart technology advance that could protect us in the future.
technology and me! January 18, 2012
I love technolgy and I feel like if we did not have technology our world would be stuck in the stone age. I have a few things to say about my relationship with technolgy. I feel that I am well with technolgy and I understand it to a point until it kicks my butt. the one thing I hate is when I cannot figure something out and a 6 year old has to show me how to do it, becuase they have never known a world without all of these smart devices. I remember when I was in the thrid grade we had the first computeers in schools they were huge, and we had to use a huge floppy disc to save files on. HAHAHA! We have come so far. I love my junk drive its tiny and it fits in my pocket or on my keychain. I love facebook! I love my tiny apple laptop! I love my I phone, becuase heaven forbid I ever get lost or stuck in traffic without my i phone I would not be able to find my way out! I mean seriously what did people do years ago when they were waiting at the doctors office? Actually read a paper back book? HUH? I want to say omg what is that, with kindle, and i phone, and i pads now days I wouldnt see anyone reading out of a book unless they were in their 70s. I always bring out my phone. I don’t know what I would do without it, seriously! DVR is my favorite type of technology. I love being able to record whatever I want and come home and watch it at my leisure, and the coolest thing is, I have Directv, and there is an app that I downloaded onto my phone, and I can watch my DVR, from home on my i phone!! If I am ever bored I can watch my recording from home at school. Coolest thing ever! Technology and I have not always gotten along. I feel like I have had the “firsts” of the worst things, that it always seems they’re still trying to work the kinks out of. I had one of the first computers with windows vista on it, and the computer was awful, it did not connect properly to anything, It could not find our WI-fi, it would connect to my wireless printer, it was not compatible with other devices. Then I had one of the first little droids they had, which was SLOW as a freaking turtle, when I got my i phone I had to pick up my chin off the floor because of how fast it actually was. Its always exciting to me when something new comes out, I am waiting for the day when they come up with DVR for your radio in the car. Because don’t you hate it when your favorite song comes on the radio, and you were just about to open the door to your car to get out. If they had DVR for the radio you could record the song and listen to it later! HAHA!
